A Random Ramble

While checking on the garden this first day of summer,  I discovered that the Florida cannas are blooming.  Solid yellow blooms against the medium green spear shaped leaves are every bit as beautiful as their hybrid counterparts.

Another surprise in yellow is the forsythia sage bloom spike.  This isn't supposed to bloom until fall.  I have several clumps of this sage in other parts of the garden that are behaving normally.  Yet, this one has several budding spikes. I couldn't catch him by camera, but a hummingbird was visiting these flowers.

Staying in the shade for my ramble through the garden, I spotted the flamingo flower blooming.  I've seen these as bushes maybe three feet or so tall in other gardens, but mine seem content to stay only about two feet high.  Eventually they are going to have to grow or I'm going to have to move them in front of the larger persian shield and variegated shefflera.

Back on the porch, I'm happy to report the pencil cactus is putting out lots of new growth where I cut it in half to give the top portion to my daughter.  She has the pretty half.  It'll be interesting to see how mine shapes up in the future.  This is such an unusual plant I think it will just add to the quirkiness to have a little 'jog' in the growth.

The succulent container I planted last summer is getting leggy from stretching toward the eastern sun.  I really must be more diligent in turning it a quarter turn every few days to help it grow more well rounded.

Today is officially the  first day of summer and due to the ensuing heat, gardening will be kept to early morning hours for the next few months.  Any major garden projects will have to wait until fall to be implemented.( I seem to still have quite a few projects left from the list I made for last fall. )

My June Faves

On the 25th of every month Simply Susan! posts favorites from her garden for the month.  I'm joining in on the fun.

Okay, I know these aren't flowers, but they are ON flowers.  Blue plumbago, milkweed, zinnias and pentas seem to be the favorite flowers for the butterflies this month.  That makes them favorites of mine too.

The cannas began blooming just this week!  I love when they bloom as they fill in the back fence area with big blooms that can be seen from the back porch.  Late in the summer last year a hummingbird would visit them .  I haven't seen any hummingbirds yet this year but I'm hoping that, now more flowers are blooming, they will come.

Go on over to Simply Susan! and see what's filling other gardeners with joy this month.

Just Before Sunset

When the sun gets low in the western sky, the light cuts across the backyard and glows through the foliage.

The tropical leaves of bananas, cannas, gingers and cyperus are a bright reflection of the sunlight's last rays.

Even the common Purple Queen becomes a translucent beauty in this magic light.

The bog area which is usually pretty non-descript becomes a bright beauty.

The last shadows play against the back fence and then the day is done.

(Just finished weeding and mulching this area along the back fence and wanted someone to see it before the weeds grew back.)

They Made It!

I know that whining about the big freeze has been very much overdone at My Garden Path, so today I declare that I am officially over it.

Clockwise from Top Left - Fig, Firespike, Butterfly Ginger, Papyrus, Crinum, Ice Cream Banana

Many of the plants I thought were never to be seen again have begun to push through the oak leaf mulch.  Soon they will back better than ever just as they were last spring.
Clockwise from Top Left Ending in the Middle - Cat's Whisker, Penta, Canna, Tibouchina, Passion Vine, Grand NainxSumatrana Banana, Butterfly Cassia

The list of plants not showing signs of life is very short:  a few Hibiscus, Firebush, Pseuderanthemum, Clerodendrum.  By the end of March if they haven't woken up they will be replaced with other more cold hardy specimens.  The only one I will really miss is the Firebush, so I may get another of those for the hummingbirds.

At last, I'm able to go out into the garden and see life and growth!
