In fall of 2009, B. Multiplex 'fernleaf' was planted to provide some privacy against my neighbor's chainlink fence. You can see pictures of the bamboo in February of 2010 in an earlier blog post here: Bamboo pictures from 2/2010.
I really do hope you will look back at the older post about this hedge. That way you can appreciate how gigantic it has become. It provides great privacy and blocks out the view of the road on the other side of the neighbor's house completely.
I didn't realize how thick it had grown until I trimmed it up to keep it off the fence and discovered that my neighbor had put a utility shed on the other side of the fence. Who knew?
This is a clumping bamboo that can be kept from getting too wide by trimming the culms as they come up. I've read that some people just step on a newly emerging shoot and knock it over to eliminate it. Once a shoot is trimmed it doesn't continue to grow. I sure hope this is as easy a process as it sounds.
Seriously! I remember that first post and those photos and WOW it has really done the job and more. Not just that but it is pretty and I love it! So interesting you didn't even know about the storage shed and so nice to look at the green of the bamboo and not metal. I'm with you though... I hope it is easy to control after it reaches the size you need for it to be. Will it get any taller?

ReplyDeleteThey are gorgeous! I love the look of bamboo and it sounds like yours is doing a good job of blocking the view. Have a Merry Christmas Kay.
ReplyDeleteWow, what a transformation. It looks like you have no neighbors, and they're such pretty plants. Your flax lilies are really coming along. Very attractive bed, Kay. And Merry Christmas!!
ReplyDeleteMeems - Thanks! I love the look of it and the privacy I now enjoy when out in the backyard. It shouldn't get any taller. This variety is 8-10' and it is 10-12' now.
ReplyDeletemr florida garden - I'm not too good at telepathy, so try looking at: http://www.dunrovenfarmbamboo.com/
Susan - Thanks, and Merry Christmas to you as well.
sherryocala - I'm also loving my flax lilies but I had to move them out from the bamboo so they are still settling in a bit. Merry Christmas!
